3/29 - "SINCE CHRIST IS LORD OF HEAVEN AND EARTH, HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING?"

. Posted in 2013 Lenten Readings

Are you a singer? I mean, do you sing, not are you a Singer with a capital “S”.  It seems that songs to be sung have been a part of my life since the time I could hardly wait to get into third grade so that I could join the Children’s Choir at church and on through Junior Choir, Senior Choir, Chaminade Singers and all with what a former director kindly referred to as a “good chorus voice”!

Do you sing along with the hymns on Sunday, with and to your children and grandchildren, in the shower, with the radio in the car? If you do, you are using a musical instrument that requires no training, only a bit of listening and a bit of joy to produce music. And it’s good for you too!

I’ll bet if you think back on it, you’ll find the most memorable moments in your life were accompanied by a song; a lullaby or lovely hymn, a rousing campfire song with friends, a romantic melody to dance to, a silly nonsense song sung with a beloved child. I am in awe of those who are gifted with the ability to compose any kind of music.

There is nothing which compares to the wonder of joining with others to take notes from a page of music, each in his own part, to produce a harmonic whole. This is synergy of the highest order! And to do this as a praise offering to our God is a great blessing.

So raise your voice in song, whenever and wherever you can; who cares if you’re not opera material. You are a child of God and He has given you a voice. Praise Him!

My life flows on in endless song

above earth’s lamentation,

I catch the sweet, though far off hymn

that hails a new creation

Through all the tumult and the strife,

I hear that music ringing.

It finds an echo in my soul.

How can I keep from singing?

What though my joys and comforts die?

The lord my Savior liveth.

What though the darkness gather round?

Songs in the night He giveth.

The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,

a fountain ever springing!

All things are mine since I am his!

How can I keep from singing?

No storm can shake my inmost calm

while to that Rock I’m clinging.

Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth,

how can I keep from singing?
