3/10 - Humility

. Posted in 2013 Lenten Readings

In our Monday night Bible study we were challenged to write our own parable.  This is my attempt.

There was a widow who had lived longer than she had ever hoped.  Consequently, her bank account had dwindled to a meager amount and it was two weeks before her Social Security check would be deposited.

In need of a few groceries, she went to the local market.  She discovered that she could not pay for all the items in her cart and so she started to put some things back.   The store manager saw this and approached her saying that she had always been kind and generous to others and he wanted her to take all her groceries home.

The widow declined, “Thank you, but I have always paid my way and cannot accept charity.”  The manager reminded her how she had always been there to help those in need in the community and said “Put aside your pride and let us be there for you now.”

     What did the woman do?

     What would you do?

“He who humbles himself will be exalted” [Luke 14: 11]

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” [1 Peter 5: 6]
